It’s
about time female artists rule the rock genre, busting the seams of what
has been known, in the past, to be a male-dominated scene. It’s a
demanding new trend, which predicts that girl-led, Scarlet Haze may soon
become the next band to top the charts. This success story will only get
bigger and better, but looking back, it was only a matter of time before
they would find themselves evolving into what they are today. Scarlet
Haze is what you get when you combine lead singer/songwriter Kat Perkins
with drummer Shane Speltz, bassist Tony Wilson, and guitarist, Casey
Smith. On stage, this foursome is unmistakably in love with
playing their music. Together
they create a unique high-energy sound that draws even the amateur eyes
and ears into the exceptional, original product they are delivering. The Midwest has seen nothing of the like. For
Kat, it started at the age of five. You could find her performing
“concerts” in her basement for her fellow neighborhood preschoolers
– wowing them with songs such as Like
a Virgin and Manic Monday. Continuing her love and passion for music, she began
opera training at the age of nine and continued for eleven years. Coming
from local fame in her home state of North Dakota, Kat ventured to the
New York and Nashville music scenes where she further developed her
style. She returned to the
Midwest, and called upon her close friends Tony Wilson and Shane Speltz.
They began recording in September of 2004 with original guitarist, Luke
Fredrickson of LD Productions. By
November, they had finished their debut EP Out
of the Dark and were hitting the stage together in seasoned fashion.
By August of 2005, they released their first self-produced album
also entitled Out
of the Dark. While their success was undeniable and growing, no one predicted that the next stepping-stone in Scarlet Haze’s career would be hitting the stage with Bon Jovi at a sold out concert at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Leading with 15,160 votes in four days of voting, Scarlet Haze won the Battle of the Bands contest through local radio station, KQRS. An arena stage, sold out crowd, TV cameras, paparazzi, and butterflies could not stop the band from leaving their mark as the next top rock band to emerge from the Twin Cities. After such an accomplishment, Kat caught the attention of the media and was invited to sing the National Anthem in the Twin Cities for professional sports teams including the MN Timberwolves and St. Paul Saints.

In
October of 2006, Scarlet Haze won a Minnesota
Music Award for Out
of the Dark as “Best Hard Rock Recording of the Year” and
was also nominated by the Academy for the “Best Rock Artist/Group of
the Year”. Soon after, drummer Shane Speltz was honored as a featured
artist in the December 2006 issue of Modern Drummer magazine. By
the end of 2006, Scarlet Haze had sold several thousand copies of Out
of the Dark, surpassing the stats for a breakout
independent release. Scarlet
Haze has already begun planning the release of their second album. Recently,
Scarlet Haze added new blood to their lineup with guitarist Casey Smith. (Former guitarist, Luke Fredrickson, parted ways with the
band in the end of 2006.) Armed
and dangerous with a degree in Jazz Guitar, Casey was named the “Best
Rock Guitarist of the Year” in 2003.
Casey has also been chosen as 1 of 10 in the country to compete
in the semi-finals for the reality TV show, America’s
Hot Musician - beginning in early 2007.
His background brings a hard edge to Scarlet Haze’s music -
competent, controlled musical proficiency with a mad dash of
improvisational prowess. With an
outpouring of new loyal fans, Scarlet Haze has boldly taken the Midwest
rock scene by storm, and continues to expand onward and upward on the
national circuit. Keep watching for their captivating live performances
they have already taken the stage with many national recording artists
including Candlebox, Dropping Daylight, Frank Hannon of Tesla, Ian
Gillian of Deep Purple, Molly Hatchet, Bret Michaels of Poison,
and L.A. Guns, to name a few. Going into the New Year they are catching industry attention, as well as bolstering a huge fan base, who continue to launch them to the next level. Their message, music, motivation, and personalities move the hearts of a wide range of audiences. They are an inspiration and are destined for greatness. Stay tuned!
